Senior Accountant

Job Summary

The Senior Accountant is responsible for general accounting, automation initiatives, financial reporting and analysis, as well as income tax compliance. Assists in the preparation and analysis of annual budget and tax workpapers. Provides audit support and workpaper preparation. Assists in creating, analyzing and distributing financial reports and related information. Maintains files, systems and controls, and communicates recommendations for improvements. The Senior Accountant is an important and integral liaison between Finance & Accounting and other business functions.

This position is located in St. Paul, Minnesota. Relocation assistance will not be provided.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Responsible for general accounting and assigned monthly close tasks including, but not limited to, the preparation of journal entries, account reconciliations, and other analysis. Ensures timeliness, accuracy, and completeness as it pertains to the close process.
  • Responsible for the product capitalization including, but not limited to, project set up, journal entry preparation, account reconciliations, labor tracking, forecast management, and reserve analysis. Periodically tests for impairment.
  • Assists with debt administration efforts. Tracks and accounts for changes in debt structure, ensuring debt levels are maintained within guidelines. Prepares related entries and account reconciliations.
  • Responsible for fixed asset tracking and related software administration. Maintains book, tax, and AMT depreciation tables. Ensures proper asset classification. Periodically review for assets no longer in service. Works with IT, warehouse, and purchasing to ensure completeness of asset tagging.
  • Responsible for income tax compliance and administration. Prepares income tax payment requests and certified mail receipts. Ensures timely filing. Logs, investigates, and responds to income tax notices. Stays current on changes in tax laws and rates.
  • Creates, modifies, generates, and distributes financial reports. Prepares ad hoc financial and operational reports as requested.
  • Researches and analyzes variances and unusual transactions as identified. Communicates and resolves as appropriate.
  • Provides financial support, interfacing with all levels of management and external customers. Works with budget managers in making financial decisions in order to achieve financial and operational goals.
  • Assists with year-end audit and tax workpaper preparation, as well as annual budget process and provides required support.
  • Recommends, establishes, and maintains controls to ensure accuracy and provide safeguards.
  • Performs system testing as required for software upgrades, enhancements, corrections, and changes.
  • Complete other duties as assigned.

Education and Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Finance. CPA designation (active or inactive)
  • 5 or more years mix of public and industry experience required (minimum 2 years in public accounting is preferred)

  • Generally Accepted Accounting Principals (GAAP) knowledge, working knowledge of business income tax laws and regulations, and financial reporting standards experience required
  • Key competencies include: Ability to deliver results accurately and on time. Ability to gather, analyze and determine implications of financial data and communicate effectively. Candidate must possess a process mindset and customer service attitude. Must demonstrate professional acumen. Proficient in computer applications including Microsoft Office, financial software, query tools and ERP systems. Excellent communication, organizational and interpersonal skills.
